The Minories Galleries houses a contemporary art gallery run by Colchester School of Art.
A listed Georgian building, The Minories is of regional importance for both its renowned contemporary art programme and architecturally within the historic town of Colchester. The Minories is next door to Firstsite, Colchester’s venue for world class contemporary art, in the centre of the town’s cultural quarter.
As part of the School of Art, the galleries prestigious space's are utalised in the delivery of the BA [Hons] in Fine Art. Seminars, presentations and workshop take place in the gallery alongside group visits to its rolling programme of exhibitions. Students are also encouraged to develop exhibition proposals which can be shown at The Minories, providing experience of exhibiting, curating and selecting in a professional setting.
The Victor Batte-Lay Foundation, assisted by The Friends of The Minories support group, have ensured the building be used to present art for the community of Colchester and visitors to the town. This has continued and now ensures the Colchester School of Art provides contemporary art and design in one of Colchester’s most distinctive buildings.
The building is also home to The Minories Shop selling some of the best art and crafts to be found across the region.
As well as the public gallery and shop, there is also the Batte-Lay Tea Rooms [run by Tiptree] and a wonderful walled garden maintained by The Friends of The Minories.
BA Fine Art students have participated in a range of exhibitions and collaborations with The Minories. This includes solo, two-person and group shows with Fine Art students and other School of Art courses. Additonal external colaborations have taken place such as Conversations a groups show with members of Colchester Arts Society.
As part of the award, the selected Graduate Award Scheme student, has a solo exhibition at The Minories.
